At NaturalAnnie Essentials Candle Bar, we had the privilege of hosting 72 incredible young ladies from Norwalk Public Schools’ local chapter of My Sister’s Keeper, led by Brien McMahon High School Assistant Principal, LaShante James. This inspiring program, launched by former President Barack Obama in 2014, provides mentoring opportunities for students of color, fostering leadership, community engagement, and personal growth.
Our candle-making experience proved to be an enriching activity that goes beyond crafting; it creates lasting memories, encourages teamwork, and empowers young minds. Here's how our experience benefits students:
5 Ways Our Candle-Making Experience Benefits Children and Fosters Team Building
-
Encourages Creativity
Candle making is a hands-on activity that inspires children to tap into their creativity. By choosing colors, scents, and designs, students can express themselves in a fun and unique way, building their confidence and sparking imagination. -
The Candle Making Experience Promotes Socialization
Working together in a relaxed, welcoming environment helps students build meaningful connections with peers and mentors. Conversations flow naturally, fostering stronger relationships and a sense of community. -
Teaches Collaboration and Teamwork
Candle-making workshops often involve group activities, requiring students to share materials, help each other, and solve problems together. This teamwork builds important skills they’ll use throughout their lives. -
Boosts Focus and Mindfulness
Crafting candles is a calming, tactile process that requires focus and attention to detail. For students, this can serve as a much-needed break from screens, while teaching patience and the value of slowing down. -
Provides a Sense of Accomplishment
By creating something tangible, students experience a rewarding sense of accomplishment. They leave with their finished candles, a reminder of their creativity and hard work.
